When it comes to Thanksgiving, turkey may be the first thing that comes to mind. It’s the right picture, but it’s not complete.
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with much enthusiasm and maintain many traditional customs. Here we introduce a few of the rituals(仪式) Americans typically follow on this day.
Thanksgiving Day has been associated with communal(教派间的) prayers in church and in homes for centuries. Attending church prayer services in the morning is the first step of many celebrators on Thanksgiving Day. Before Thanksgiving meals, some families gather together and read prayers to thank God for his kindness and the gifts he has given them in the form of friends and family.
Like China’s Spring Festival, preparing a big meal and bring the family together at home is a long-standing tradition of Thanksgiving. Distances don’t really matter as relatives return home to be with their family, no matter how far away. Undoubtedly, turkey is the main course of Thanksgiving dinner. At the meal, many families observe the ritual of taking turns to express what each member is thankful for.
While feasts make Thanksgiving a festival for individual families, parades make it a carnival(狂欢节) for the whole nation. Various parades are held in many cities to honor Thanksgiving. One of the largest is New York’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Started in 1924, more than 2 million people attend the parade every year.
After-dinner rituals are just as important as the meal itself, and no after-dinner ritual is more important than the football game. The U.S. National Football League has played a special game on Thanksgiving every year since its creation in 1920. It’s referred to as the Thanksgiving Classic.
While Chinese citizens enjoy an online shopping spree on Nov. 11, Americans flood to physical stores just after Thanksgiving. Many employers give their employees the day off as part of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, so shop keepers seize the opportunity to offer discounts and put items on sale. Hundreds of thousands of people take advantage of the opportunity to hunt for bargains.
1. What might be the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce some Thanksgiving customs.
B. To compare the Spring Festival with Thanksgiving Day.
C. To tell the readers the origin of Thanksgiving Day.
D. To highlight the importance of family reunions.
2. What do Americans usually do first on Thanksgiving Day?
A. Pray to God in church and in homes.
B. Enjoy Thanksgiving meals.
C. Hold various parades.
D. Have a special football game.
3. What make Thanksgiving Day a public festival of the whole nation?
A. Feasts.              B. Various parades.
C. Communal prayers.    D. Football games.
4. Why do Americans flood to physical stores just after Thanksgiving?
A. They go there to buy football game tickets.
B. Many employers give their employees a day off.
C. Shop keepers offer discounts to the customers.
D. They buy turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner.
答案:1. A  2. A  3. B  4. C

An Interesting Festival有趣的节日
The Agricultural Feast takes place after the Independence Day. It is not a worldwide celebration. Only Christians in Mexico look forward to its arrival for its religious origin:
Long ago, humans’ ancestors were bad. They fooled and played tricks on each other and never kept their word. So God turned up and drowned all their crops. Humans starved day and night, weeping. In order to gain God’s forgiveness, a woman poet set off to see God. She admired God and kept apologizing. God was moved. With his permission, humans finally had good harvests again. So, to wipe sadness and remind themselves of the belief in God, people began the festival.
On the festival, people gather in open air, such as playgrounds or parking lots, and energetically have fun with each other all night long, as though they were never tired. When a beauty dressed up in lovely clothing reads poems in memory of the poet, everyone holds their breath. Then, it is the custom that the bone of a rooster head is given to her as an award.
Obviously, the story is not true, but the festival is interesting.
